About thirteen years ago, I drew a virtual line in the sand. After years of shooting with Nikon cameras,
I decided to prove something I had believed for a long time: the camera doesn’t make the photograph—the
photographer does. I believed I could make a better image with a phone than most people could make with
a “real” camera. So the phone became my primary camera. Portraits, music, entertainment, commercial work,
people, places and whatever catches my eye—I shoot it with the camera that’s with me. Live performance is
the main exception, where I still use traditional cameras when the job calls for them.
The two most important things about a camera are what’s in front of it and who’s behind it.
